Improving English in Primary Schools

For head teachers and senior leaders: a two day course on effective strategy for English and literacy

Outline

  • Build an effective strategy for English as a whole-school priority
  • Ensure that practice is up-to-date and rooted in evidence
  • Raise attainment in English and across the curriculum

Description

This unique two-day course is an opportunity for school leaders to explore in depth the challenges of raising attainment in English and literacy. Building on EEF research findings and other up-to-date evidence, it will offer a range of highly practical ways to develop strategy and to improve practice.
The course is designed for head teachers and other school leaders, although it would also be of use for English subject leaders, especially if they are able to attend with a senior colleague.

The course will cover:
  • The central place of reading, writing and talk in the curriculum, in school culture and in children’s lives
  • Tools for auditing practice and reviewing strategy
  • Updating practice: current evidence; dispelling myths
  • Exploring models of leadership in English
  • Seeing progress: what to look for in children’s work and in classrooms
  • Ten questions: a framework for reviewing approaches to reading and writing
  • Marking, feedback and workload: what’s the evidence?
  • Ofsted readiness
  • Identifying priorities and planning actions
