Talking Mats ® Foundation Training

Outline

Accredited course taught over 2 half days (both parts must be attended) for which you will receive a symbol set suitable for your setting, certificate, registration with Talking Mats® and a published booklet by Talking Mats ®

Description

1) This 2 part course will enable you to develop an understanding of using Talking Mats® as a tool to effectively obtain the views of children and young people with communication difficulties in your setting. 2) You will learn how to use Talking Mats® in a variety of ways to help you to explore and problem solve issues a child may be experiencing or to obtain children’s views to inform outcomes for SEN Support Plans or EHCPs in a child centred way. 3) You will also explore communication skills, how these develop in children and young people and think about your own skills when communicating with children and young people 4)The first part of the course considers theory of communication and preparation of using Talking Mats in your own setting. The second part of the course is more practical based where we look at short videos of each other undertaking a Talking Mat®. Participants value this part of the course where they can learn from each other and feel confident to use talking mats in their own setting. 5) The course also provides a forum to discuss issues pertinent to settings and work together to help solve these through planning Talking Mats® sessions. 6)This course is suitable for staff working with children who have symbolic understanding.
