Engaging all learners in mathematics through inquiry.
Following on from last summer’s highly successful ’An Afternoon with Don Steward’, we are really pleased that Andrew Blair has kindly agreed to lead the afternoon for this summer’s Secondary Mathematics Network. Andrew is currently Head of Mathematics at Haverstock School, Camden London, and the creator of inquirymaths.org and the successful twitter @inquirymaths.Andrew’s website is a gold mine of ideas, complete with teacher guidance, examples of students work, and supporting resources for those wishing to try out inquiries. As the homepage of the Inquiry Maths website explains: Inquiry Maths is an exciting model of teaching mathematics that has been used in classrooms around the world. It encourages students to regulate their own activity while exploring a prompt. Inquiries start with students' questions and conjectures and might involve a class on diverse pathways of exploration and proof or in requesting a teacher's explanation.
This afternoon session complements our secondary mathematics networks. If you are a subject leader in North Yorkshire and your school is part of SLA, then this session forms part of the normal summer network and is therefore free to attend. If you wish to attend the whole day then please make your booking on ES-0618-T006. If you wish to attend for the afternoon session only you can register here. The workshop will introduce the Inquiry Maths model, include advice about how teachers can use the model with their own classes and give participants the chance to experience the creativity of classroom inquiry.
