Raising Achievement and Pupil Premium Strategy – Governor Training Session

This is a two hour evening session with a combination of presentation and participative activities.

This training will support the role of governors in ensuring they are meeting the new statutory requirement from September 2016 to have in place a pupil premium strategy which is published on the school’s website. This replaces the previous requirement to have a pupil premium statement. Governors are now expected to be clear in the strategy about the barriers to achievement for pupils in receipt of the pupil premium, the rationale and evaluation of the use of the pupil premium spend.
The training will support the role of the governing board in the regular review of the school’s pupil premium strategy as part of the school’s self-evaluation processes. Tools to support the governors’ role in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the pupil premium strategy will be shared, together with how the Ofsted inspection process will inspect and report on the use of the pupil premium. Exemplar school websites will be signposted.
Sources of evidenced based practice to inform the pupil premium strategy will be provided including national research and outcomes from the North Yorkshire Achievement Unlocked programme, which has focussed on raising achievement of disadvantaged pupils and those with other barriers to learning

As a result of attending, delegates should:
  • Understand the local and national context for the Pupil Premium
  • An understanding of the most effective strategies for raising achievement of all pupils, but with a particular focus on pupils who are disadvantaged and/ or those with other identified barriers to learning
  • Understand the role of the governing body in the monitoring and evaluation of the key priorities for raising achievement, including of disadvantaged pupils and/or those with other identified barriers to learning in your school
  • Know about specific tools which can support the role of governors
  • Understand how Ofsted will evaluate the effectiveness of the governing body and its accountability for use of pupil premium
